Marcus Verhagen wrote his doctoral dissertation on visual culture in France in the late nineteenth century. Still working on nineteenth-century art, he taught at universities in both Britain and the States in the nineties. Working primarily on contemporary art in the years since 2002, he has written over sixty articles and reviews for art magazines such as Art Monthly, Art Review and frieze, while also occasionally writing catalogue essays. He has published in several periodicals, including Representations, New Left Review, Third Text and Afterall. Much of his recent work revolves around globalisation; he has, for instance, written several articles on representations of migration and tourism in contemporary art.
