Overview

For most of the nineteenth century, and much of the twentieth, Paris was at the heart of artistic practice in the West. Taking place in Paris itself, this exciting four-day course immerses participants in the story of the French capital as the birthplace of such ground-breaking movements as Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. From the serene waterlilies of Claude Monet to the frenetic dance halls of Toulouse-Lautrec, and from the scenes of everyday life captured by Courbet to the enigmatic figures immortalized by Manet, the paintings, drawings and sculptures produced by artists in Paris between 1860 and 1940 are among some of the most influential and inspiring in modern history. Led by Ben Street, Consultant Lecturer at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, and consisting of classroom-based lectures as well as guided visits to major museums and galleries, the program provides a panoramic overview of art from a uniquely vibrant time and place.
