Overview

Painting continues to be one of the most popular means of expression in contemporary artistic practice. Despite regular claims of its demise, painting is capable of continually reinventing itself and asserting its place within contemporary culture. Uniquely in contemporary art, painting contends with a rich and complex history, which can be both burden and springboard. This course will take on the vast sweep of painting since 1960, addressing its crises of confidence, the role of the market and its relationship with competing media such as photography, video, performance and conceptual art.
