About the Program
A first of its kind program, the Sotheby’s Institute Master’s in Art Business + Fine Art offered in Los Angeles is designed for a new generation of artists looking for the entrepreneurial acumen that is necessary today to build a sustainable creative practice and professional life in the arts.
The interfield program merges studio practice from Claremont Graduate University’s Master of Fine Art (MFA) program with coursework in the business, markets, history, and theory of art, as well as core courses in finance, accounting, law, and marketing. Students maintain a fine art practice while learning transferable business and management principles and techniques. In contrast to a conventional MFA, candidates for this degree pursue an entrepreneurship sequence, capped by the Startup Studio—a course in which creative initiatives are pitched to panels of artists, arts professionals, business leaders, and entrepreneurs from the Los Angeles community.
All programs are headquartered on the beautiful Claremont campus, but a number of its classes are held in downtown Los Angeles, a new vibrant arts center for this cultural capital. The classroom learning experience is further amplified by regular Field Study trips that bring students into direct contact with art practitioners in Los Angeles and abroad.
About Our Students
Graduates of the MA in Art Business + Fine Art are uniquely positioned to sustain a successful art practice in today’s market. Understanding the culture of the studio, and the kind of work, planning, and management required to engage in ambitious artistic projects, either at large scale or over long periods of time, is more necessary today than at any time before.
The program prepares students to enter into a myriad of enterprises post graduation. Through the field trips that are a fundamental part of the program, students take an active role in the art world and create the connections that become a part of their future professional networks.
