New Master’s program developed in London to address rising demand for educated professionals in the Asian art field.

Sotheby’s Institute of Art - London is launching a new Master’s degree in Modern and Contemporary Asian Art commencing in September 2016. This ground breaking new course will provide students with critical tools and expertise in the growing field of Asian art. The program has been developed in response to the rapid expansion and development of the Asian art world in recent years and the increasing demand for educated professionals in the field.

Key areas of study will include the analysis and critical evaluation of modern and contemporary art production in East, South and South-East Asia with a view to providing both academic and practical expertise for students seeking work in the professional art world. Artistic developments and artworks from Asian countries will be examined, debated and analysed in order to gain an understanding of the complex strands and connections across local, regional and global networks through appropriate cultural and theoretical contexts.

The diversity of artistic output from the region will be studied via an object-based approach within museum collections, private collections and galleries. The engagement with the market will be studied with special attention to the auction world. Students will acquire competencies for articulating and presenting the work of modern and contemporary Asian artists at a sophisticated and nuanced level.

“There will be an increasing need for graduates with Asian art expertise to enter the workplace in museums, public and private galleries, art fairs, auction houses and biennials internationally,” said Jos Hackforth-Jones, Director of Sotheby’s Institute of Art - London. “In particular, this MA will respond to the rapidly increasing need in Asia for professionals in these fields. In order to address this, students will acquire a range of skill sets to enable a high degree of employability in both the public and commercial art world.”
