Art History: Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism

This course starts with Romanticism and addresses the need for new means of expression that reflected the modern age in the mid-19th century, via Barbizon and the realism of Manet and Courbet.

The ways in which the Impressionists reevaluated ways of seeing and their realisation in painting is followed by an overview of the variety that was the hallmark of the Post-Impressionists. The radicalism of the early 20th century in the form of movements such as Cubism, Futurism and Surrealism is explored and the final class looks at the changes wrought by the Second World War and the emergence of Abstract Expressionism in New York.
