About the Program
Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York offers a collaborative program for a Master's in Art Business with Tsinghua University.
During two semesters in Beijing and two semesters in New York, ending with a final capstone project, students receive their MA in Art Business degree from Sotheby’s Institute and gain official recognition from the Ministry of Education of China. The capstone project can be completed in New York, Beijing, or off-campus under the direction of a faculty advisor. Students may enroll in an optional third semester at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in a second area of study at Sotheby’s Institute in New York or London.
Over the course of their studies, students take courses across three fundamental areas: markets (the context for art business), management (the organizations of art business), and connoisseurship and collecting (the objects of art business).These areas encompass art law, marketing and strategy, finance and accounting, and specialized courses include emerging art markets, valuation, collection management and curating. Students seeking practical work experience in Beijing may be eligible for internships at organizations such as 798 Cultural & Creative Industry Investment Co., Ltd, Baoku China, China Minsheng Bank Private Banking, Taikang Space, and Ullens Center for Contemporary Art.
All coursework and instruction at Tsinghua University is conducted in Mandarin. Instruction and coursework in New York is conducted in English. The curriculum table below includes all courses subject to the agreement. Students must complete all 12 transferable credits at Tsinghua University prior to starting two semesters of coursework in New York with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. (Please note that transfer credits are not applicable to the Sotheby's Institute-New York cumulative GPA).
Upon successful completion of all degree requirements, graduates receive official recognition from the Ministry of Education of China and a Master’s Degree in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York. Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York holds permanent degree-granting authority from the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
