    Field Study

First-hand encounters with art works, exhibition spaces, and the people who run them are an integral part of the learning experience and key to this program. New York is a major center for art collections and art institutions alike, and faculty-led visits to museums and galleries are fundamental to the framework of the Institute. As the host to The Armory Show, Frieze, the Winter Antiques Show, and The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF)-NY, New York City provides many opportunities for students to meet gallerists and experts from around the world.
The program also includes two field study courses during which students will immerse themselves in the local art community. The culmination of the field study course contextualizes art market, art historical and art object information through daily visits to fairs, galleries, private collections, museums, artist studios, and more. Students are expected to be active participants and to discuss ideas with local art world professionals. Trip locations vary per year to include timely and relevant exhibitions, fairs, and art world events. Past trips have included Art Basel Miami Beach, The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) in Maastricht, Beijing, and the Venice Biennial.
