In collaboration with Frieze, Sotheby’s Institute of Art has launched a series of courses with collectors and dealers in mind. Collecting At was designed with the purpose of preparing participants with the tools and knowledge to feel more equipped and confident in attending Frieze art fair and engaging as either a collector or dealer.
Designed for those who have some experience of the art world and want to develop their skills to continue growing their personal collection or that of their businesses, the courses delve into the art of collecting through three main themes, Collecting: A Journey of Discover, Honing your eye – Preference, Knowledge and Taste, and Developing Influence - Collecting with Purpose. Expert lectures will be punctuated with exciting visits and behind the scene access to leading art world spaces. Uniquely, all students who enrol on the course will be granted Frieze 91 membership for 12 months, providing them with VIP access to all Frieze fairs and specially curated events.
Seoul (September 4, 5, 7)
The South Korean art market is a major economy and influencer within the global art market boasting the highest number of private art museums in the world. In keeping with these developments across three days, leading faculty and industry experts will provide an exclusive and unique opportunity to engage with an exclusive course offered during Seoul Frieze week.
Delivered in English and Korean, the course will invite students globally to learn, discover and network together. Alongside lectures lead by the Course Leader, Dr Katie Hill, Sotheby’s Institute of Art’s lead on Asia, students will hear from an exciting and diverse schedule of guest speakers. Each of the three days have been curated to create opportunities for students to hear from the prestigious speakers in dynamic lectures in the mornings, such as Mathieu Borysevicz, Director of Bank, Shanghai, renowned Korean collector Mr Higgin Kim and Mr Seo Jinseok, Director of Ulsan digital museum. Students will then be able to explore and apply learnings with behind-the-scenes and exclusive access to visits in the afternoons, led by industry insiders such as Cho Hye-Young, Secretary General for the Korea Craft and Design Foundation and a unique opportunity to visit Korean artist Lee Bul’s exhibition, led by Bul herself. The course culminates with a private tour of Frieze led by former CEO of K Auction – Mr Kim Soon-Eung.
London (October 9, 10, 12)
Led by industry expert and gallery director, Ed Leeson, the London iteration explores collecting through the prism of the London art world. An international taste-maker, London creates an ideal environment for living and learning within a vibrant community of art professionals. Based at Sotheby’s Institute of Art’s historic Bedford Square, complimented with visits to leading contemporary spaces and Sotheby’s Auction House, as well as Frieze art fair on the VIP opening day, the course will be the perfect introduction or deep dive into London's art scene.
Alongside lectures lead by the course leader, students will hear from an exciting and diverse schedule of guest speakers. Each of the three days have been curated to create opportunities for students to hear from the prestigious speakers in dynamic lectures in the mornings, including Lucy Chadwick, founder of Champ Lacombe and former Director of Gavin Brown, Will Jarvis, founder of the Sunday Painter, and Alex Petalas collector and founder of The Perimeter. Students will then be able to explore and apply learnings with behind-the-scenes and exclusive access to visits in the afternoons, led by industry insiders such as Selvi May Akyildiz, Director of Frieze No. 9 Cork Street.
Both courses will be complimented with optional evening events, utilizing the thriving social scene in both Seoul and London during Frieze week - the perfect opportunity to network and use the skills you have honed during the class.
