Sotheby’s Institute of Art Presents: The Other To Itself (Opening Reception)

Sotheby’s Institute of Art is pleased to present The Other To Itself, an exhibition that focuses on reclaiming the rights of the female body and the stories behind it through the perspective of female artists.

Featuring the work of artists Colleen Barry, Elizabeth Bick, Katherine Blackburne, Chloe Gao, Helen Haoyi Yu, Letizia Kutscher, Nianxin Li, Yiwei Lu, Kanishka Porwal, Jingyi Wang, Aura Wang, Irene Ailin Wang and Tianshu Zhang. All these female artists explore diverse portrayals of the female body through their works. From Nianxin Li’s still-life reinterpretation inspired by women’s body parts, Katherine Blackburne’s understanding of bodies as perceptual entities or Tianshu Zhang’s fantastic depiction of body energy through contemporary surrealism, each one of the artists with their unique approach, collectively contribute to the ongoing narrative of reclaiming and redefining the female body.

While the female body has often been a subject of both admiration and defamation, its narratives have frequently been controlled by men. Curators Myrtha Herrera and Daphney Zeng aim to reclaim power over the narrative to women, considering the idea that the human body is the embodiment of existence.
