With its entrance covered by sheer white curtains printed with images of Ivory soap, Leila Heller Gallery has been transformed into a space of meditation and catharsis by “PURE,” the latest exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Rachel Lee Hovnanian. Leila Heller, a Sotheby’s Institute of Art alumna of 1976 and President of Leila Heller Gallery, hosted nearly 100 Sotheby’s Institute guests at her space in Chelsea on June 12, 2018. With galleries in both New York City and Dubai, Ms. Heller is an iconic female gallerist who began her prestigious career in the MA program at Sotheby’s Institute of Art.
Hovnanian’s art explores the ideas of social constructs, consumerism, and societal pressures, and sparked lively conversation amongst the attendees. Guests had the opportunity to get up close and personal with featured artist Rachel Lee Hovnanian’s work, sitting in meditation pods and smashing sculpted bars of soap scrawled with negative thoughts they wanted to delete from their lives.
In attendance were dozens of Sotheby’s Institute of Art alumni, living examples of the power of a Sotheby’s degree. Guests included Shannon Stobbe, Director of Operations, UOVO; Marc Hajjar, Associate Director, Winston Art Group; Alia Williams, Director, Jeffrey Deitch; Jessica Davidson, Founder, Davidson Art Advisory; and Josh Campbell, Director of Strategic Partnerships, Eazel.
The Sotheby’s Institute of Art alumni community spans six continents, with over 6,000 members working as leaders in the arts industry since the Institute’s founding in 1969. In addition to connecting at receptions and networking events these alumni also use SIAconnect, Sotheby’s Institute’s exclusive networking and careers platform, to stay in touch and collaborate.
