Ann-Marie Richard is no stranger to SIA given her tenure here, starting almost a decade ago as adjunct faculty in the Art Business MA program in 2012. She is also an alumna of the London campus, having completed with distinction what was then known as the Works of Art Course.
Ann-Marie matriculated from the Smithsonian National Design Museum/Parsons School of Design MA in the History of Decorative Arts and attended New York University where she completed coursework in New York and Paris. Most recently at Sotheby’s Institute, she held the role of Interim Director for SIA NY’s MA Program. Prior to that, she was MA Director of the Fine and Decorative Art and Design Program (MAFDAD) in New York. Throughout her professional career, she has lectured extensively on the topics of retrospective and emerging art markets, connoisseurship, collecting, conservation, provenance, and the related subtleties of appraising fine and decorative art and design.
In addition to her trade experience and credentials in academia, Ann-Marie is a USPAP compliant appraiser. She has had an illustrious career in the world of art business, which allows her to bring the highly valued market and real-world perspectives into SIA’s offerings. Prior to joining the Institute full-time in 2017, she was an Executive Vice President with Gurr Johns, a premier global art advisory and appraisal firm. During her time there she led high-profile valuation assignments, business development efforts and liaise with an international roster of collectors. Early in her career, she was appointed Senior Advisor to the CEO at O’Toole-Ewald Art Associates, a boutique appraisal firm specializing in artist estates and art-related legal matters. Ann-Marie has extensive experience running businesses including her own contemporary art gallery in Brooklyn and providing strategic direction for her family’s art and antique business in Canada.
For the last several years, Ann-Marie has been writing “The Valuation of Fine Art and Design: A Handbook for Professionals”, which is scheduled to be published in 2022 by Lund Humphries in London. In her spare time, Ann-Marie photographs “everything and anything” (35,694 photos stored in her iPhone and counting), loves to experiment in the kitchen, eat exotic fruits, and hunt for treasures in nature.
