The Art of Collecting: Executive Course is designed to offer both a global view of the art market and a concentrated view of trends in Seoul.
The South Korean art market is a major economy and influencer within the global art market boasting the highest number of private art museums in the world. In keeping with these developments, from August 29 to September 2, 2022, leading faculty and industry experts will provide an exclusive and unique opportunity to engage with an exclusive course offered during Seoul Frieze week, The Art of Collecting.
The Art of Collecting is designed with collectors and dealers in mind. It is for those who have some experience of the art world and want to develop their skills to continue growing their personal collection or that of their businesses. The course was built with the purpose of preparing the participants with the tools and knowledge to feel more equipped and confident in attending Frieze art fair during the week and engaging as either a collector or dealer long term.
Hosted at Foundry Seoul, lectures are provided by Betsy Thomas, presented virtually from the New York campus where she is part of the graduate faculty, and Henry Lydiate and Anders Petterson both presenting virtually and live from London, and graduate faculty and Asia art market specialist Katie Hill lecturing in person in Seoul. A group activity will also be facilitated by Yulhee Kim.
Over five days the course will include an exploration of the collector’s marketplace including a focus on Frieze, an expert view of Asia’s key markets, a focused masterclass on authenticity and due diligence for collectors and dealers, and alternative methods of financing art.
Highlights include an evening visit to Space ISU with Korean arts expert Professor Yeon Shim Chung in addition to a private tour of the exhibition by the artist himself, Lee Dong-gi. A private tour of ArtSonje will be held with the Director of the gallery along with a special Q&A with Sunjung Kim, former Chief Curator of ArtSonje and current president of Gwanju Biennale.
Culminating the week, participants receive VIP access to Frieze Seoul with a tour from former K Auction CEO Kim Soon Ung. Featuring over 110 of the most influential art galleries from across Asia and beyond, Frieze's first fair in Asia will feature more than 110 galleries. As well as these lectures and activities, there will be an optional networking event including the Sejong Soloists Gala Concert and admittance to the KAM Conference on Art Collecting, providing a perfect opportunity to engage with the world of art collecting and beyond.
