Masterpiece announces new initiative to support artists with commercial and art market know-how in collaboration with Royal Bank of Canada and Sotheby’s Institute of Art.
Masterpiece is delighted to announce an exciting new collaboration with its principal partner, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) – Deconstructing the Art World for Emerging Artists. The program is sponsored through the RBC Emerging Artists Project, in partnership with Sotheby’s Institute of Art.
Launching this September and aimed at artists living or working in the UK that have recently graduated from British art schools, the program is designed to build knowledge of essential commercial and art market concepts amongst the creative and artistic community. Through participation in this online course, emerging artists will learn how to navigate the art world and support themselves as creative practitioners, with topics including: promoting yourself effectively, seeking gallery representation, navigating contracts and fees, understanding the relationship between the artist and collector, and defining what’s yours - intellectual property.
The program has been curated by our Educational Partner, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, the graduate school of art and its markets, and sponsored by the RBC Emerging Artists Project, an initiative dedicated to supporting the careers of emerging artists. It provides opportunities for artists to receive mentorship, networking, training, and access and exposure to new audiences. In 2020, RBC expanded its Emerging Artists Project to Europe to help more artists bridge the gap from emerging to established and support organizations that provide the best opportunities to advance artists’ careers. Since 2015, more than 24,000 artists have benefited from their supported programs.
Masterpiece is delighted to be partnering with RBC and Sotheby’s Institute of Art on this program to support artists at such a critical time. Through collaboration with faculty from Sotheby’s Institute of Art and expert contributors from Masterpiece’s network, the project will enable the commercial know-how to help these young artists in their careers.
Prue Thompson, Senior Director of Marketing and Client Engagement at RBC Wealth Management International, said:
“RBC has a long-standing commitment to the arts - bringing our purpose to life, helping the communities where we live and work prosper. The RBC Emerging Artists Project supports organizations focused on advancing the careers of artists who are helping to shape our societies and our culture. We are privileged to be working with Masterpiece and Sotheby's Institute of Art on this exciting new initiative, particularly at such an incredibly disruptive time for the arts and education.”
Lucie Kitchener, Managing Director of Masterpiece said:
“Masterpiece has always been dedicated to supporting the next generation and we’re delighted that we are able to align our goals with RBC’s own commitment to emerging artists, in this our eighth year of RBC’s Principal Partnership. In collaboration with Sotheby’s Institute of Art as Educational Partner, Masterpiece and RBC have undertaken to provide top-tier art market expertise to early career artists, free of charge, demonstrating their shared belief in the importance of accessibility and equal opportunities.”
Joe Watson, Director of Lifelong and Continuing Education at Sotheby's Institute of Art said:
"A core purpose of Sotheby's Institute of Art is to make the art world more legible for more people. In deconstructing its opportunities and complexities through this series of compelling short films we aim to enable and encourage artistic enterprise wherever it's found in the world. We're excited to be able to do so with such forward-thinking partners."
