Art Fairs are booming. Established fairs continue to grow and proliferate at break neck speed, new venues are mushrooming, and the clientele is increasingly diverting its attention from the permanent gallery spaces to these events. The art fairs’ current global outreach and diversity seem unprecedented, yet they have a long history that goes back at least to the early modern period.
As part of a deeper exploration of the reasons for this increased activity around art fairs, The International Art Market Studies Association (TIAMSA) is holding its first international conference on Art Fairs from July 13 - 15. The conference will unite 28 speakers from countries worldwide exploring this year's theme in six sessions. Sotheby's Institute of Art will be hosting the three-day event on its London campus and its faculty members will be contributing to the dialogue with three exploratory talks:
- Yasmin Railton (Lecturer, MA Art Business), The Expert Eye: The Reputational Marketing of Scientific Research in Fair Vetting
- Gareth Fletcher (Lecturer, Art Business), The Utility of Trust: A Comparative Analysis of the Presentation and Impact of Provenance Information in Establishing Consumer Confidence within the Art Fair
- David Bellingham (Program Director, MA Art Business), "The Best of The Best": MASTERPIECE London and the Art Fair as a Lifestyle Event
