David MacGregor (Faculty, MA Art Business) has previously taught and supervised dissertation students at the University of Bolton, Lancaster University, the University of Liverpool, Salford University, Manchester Business School, and the University of East London. He has also taught in Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam. Prior to joining Sotheby's Institute of Art he worked as a guitar valuation expert for internet auction firm Catawiki Benaulim B.V. in the Netherlands, and a musical instrument valuer with Chiswick Auctions London. He has previously run his own web based vintage guitar restoration and sales business and established an online vintage guitar valuation consultancy. He has acted as a valuation expert, expert witness and risk adviser for a number of insurance companies, auction houses, the legal profession and touring rock bands. David’s research focuses on alternative asset classifications and the strategies of smaller firms and start- ups, particularly in the auction sector. He is particularly interested in the way firms construct narratives around themes such as authenticity, restoration, risk, reputation and trust; and the way that these are conveyed in both formal and informal marketing communications messages.
