Meet Hayley Smith
Director
SCOPE Art Show
MA Art Business, New York, 2021
Hayley Smith is Director of SCOPE Art Show. Hayley received her MA in Art Business from Sotheby's Institute of Art-New York in 2021.
What motivated you to pursue an MA at Sotheby’s Institute?
I pursued an MA at Sotheby’s Institute to align my passion for continuous learning with my desire to foster discovery, accessibility, and innovation in the art world. My first Master’s in liberal arts honed my critical and creative thinking skills, but my Master’s at Sotheby’s Institute offered a unique growth opportunity. It allowed me to delve deeply into a subject I love while also embracing the challenge of expanding my knowledge in new, impactful ways within an ever-evolving world.
This journey has been about pushing the boundaries of traditional art platforms, enhancing accessibility for collectors, and supporting emerging artists and galleries. All these things depend on one another and are essential to the industry we exist in.
Looking back, how did the MA Art Business program at Sotheby’s Institute equip you with the tools and knowledge to navigate the art industry?
The MA Art Business program at Sotheby’s Institute provided me with invaluable tools and knowledge to navigate the art industry. The integration of analysis, networking, cultural insights, and experiential learning was key to the program's overall success. In my work, I constantly encounter fellow alumni who are navigating the industry with similar mindsets. This holistic approach Sotheby’s Institute takes reflects my endeavor to continue SCOPE’s commitment to expanding the gallery's role within the art fair ecosystem through thoughtful programming and large-scale installations.
Can you tell us about the history of SCOPE Art Show and its role as an incubator for innovation and creativity in contemporary art?
SCOPE Art Show has a rich history as a platform for emerging galleries and artists, continuously fostering discovery and innovation in contemporary art. While each edition is curated to reflect and respond to the evolving trends in the art world, our core mission as a platform for international contemporary art remains constant. SCOPE is renowned for its innovative programming, bringing pioneering artists to the forefront and building on the traditional art gallery.
SCOPE challenges its participants to expand beyond gallery walls, inspiring global perspectives with access to over 200,000 sq ft of exhibition space. Our 23rd Miami edition builds on this legacy, championing creativity and collaboration while challenging perceptions and presenting new ways to understand and view art. This year's theme, which will be announced soon, underscores the interconnectedness of our community and the collaborative spirit that drives SCOPE forward.
Could you describe a typical day as the Director at SCOPE Art Show while preparing for the upcoming Miami Beach show?
A typical day as the Director at SCOPE Art Show varies greatly. Currently, my focus is on preparing for the upcoming Miami Beach show. Founder Alexis Hubshman and I have expanded SCOPE's Curatorial Advisory Program, assembling a team of established art professionals and curators from international markets to advocate for and engage with galleries on a global scale.
My day often starts with a meeting with the curatorial committee, led by Founder Alexis Hubshman and myself, to review curatorial proposals and ensure they align with SCOPE’s vision of discovery, focused curation, and support for emerging artists and galleries. This dynamic and collaborative approach helps us push the boundaries of what an art fair can be, creating a vibrant and innovative environment for all participants.
Can you describe your journey from graduating from the MA Art Business program at Sotheby’s Institute to becoming the Fair Director at SCOPE Art Show?
I would like to take a moment to extend my gratitude to the remarkable mentors, teachers, and friends who have guided and supported me throughout my journey (and continue to do so).
Brendan Burns was a wonderful support to me from the start of my time at Sotheby’s Institute. His classes were always engaging and relevant, giving me valuable insight into the art markets. Each of the professors at Sotheby’s Institute gave insights and support at pivotal moments, providing guidance through moments of crisis and celebration alike.
And ultimately, Alexis Hubshman’s wisdom, dedication, and belief in my abilities propelled me from the communications department to my current role. Prior to my appointment as Director, I served as SCOPE’s Head of Communications, overseeing all aspects of the fair’s external relations including the VIP program and sponsorships.
A core element of SCOPE Art Show’s mission is to foster experiential innovation and discovery through its diverse range of exhibitors. Could you provide insight on the experience attendees can anticipate at the Miami Beach show?
This year, our theme for The New Contemporary, which houses our installations and programming, will examine the power of collaboration and the concept of being better together. This is a core part of SCOPE’s mission and values as a business. Additionally, SCOPE’s sectors—Photo, Future, and CORE—highlight different facets of the contemporary art ecosystem. The Photo sector will showcase cutting-edge photography that pushes boundaries and challenges traditional perceptions. The Future sector focuses on emerging galleries, offering them a platform to present innovative works and new perspectives. CORE will feature established galleries and artists who continue to shape and redefine the contemporary art landscape.
For individuals who are still acquainting themselves with art fairs, what advice would you offer to help them maximize their experience and navigate the array of artworks on display?
When you arrive, take your time to absorb what you see. Don't rush, allow yourself to fully engage with the work. Make sure to attend the programming to deepen your understanding and connection with the art on display.
