Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York Master’s degree students mount a series of exhibitions each Spring and Fall in the landmark Art Deco General Electric building in midtown Manhattan as part of their MA in Contemporary Art course “Curating Contemporary Art: Project-Based” The exhibitions are unique in drawing from emerging artists in the region and showcase works in all media, including painting, photography, video, sculpture, installation, and performance. Most works have never been exhibited in public before and many are specially commissioned for the space. Each exhibition features an event with the curator and at least one participating artist.

About “Curating Contemporary Art: Project-Based”
Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York “Curating Contemporary Art: Project-Based” is a Master’s degree course which provides a unique opportunity to curate and mount an exhibition in the landmark Art Deco General Electric Building in midtown Manhattan. The course is taught by renowned international curators Kathy Battista and Tim Goossens. MA students master advanced knowledge of current curatorial practice through both traditional academic learning and hands-on exhibition making. In addition to studying the history and fundamentals of curating as it developed in the past century, students conduct research in the form of numerous studio visits with artists in the tri-state area and students in MFA programs in the region, and then propose and execute unique exhibitions in the Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York campus.
Students handle every aspect of exhibition planning including working with the artists, preparing marketing and press materials, organizing the private view, and leading a public event during the run of the show. These exhibitions have been a source for discovering new talent. For example, Jacqueline Yaraghi, MA Contemporary Art, Class of 2016, showed NADA Artadia 2018 prize winner Farah Al Quasimi in Fall 2016. Exhibition openings are open and free to the public by RSVP, and exhibitions are open on other days by appointment. These are non-commercial exhibitions; works are not for sale.
