How would you describe your Sotheby’s Institute experience?

My learning experience at Sotheby’s Institute of Art-London can be described in three words: insightful, inspiring, and unique.

The practical and theoretical art-related knowledge acquired during the 12-week Art History and Art Business Certificate was unmatched. This program challenged me in many unexpected ways through the curriculum’s variety of topics and experts, while at the same time developing professional skills aligned with my career interests in the art world. Learning through lectures, seminars, and on-site visits led me not only to better understand the art world’s ecosystem and evolution, but also to chart my future role within it.

What were the key elements of the 12-week Certificate course that influenced your decision to study with Sotheby’s Institute?

Having a deep appreciation for the arts and culture, as well as being a creative enthusiast, I was thrilled to undertake the Certificate in Art History and Art Business following my graduation from King’s College London in Summer 2024.

The program appealed to me because it combines expert-led classroom teaching with on-site visits to London’s most exclusive museums, galleries, studios, and more. Specifically, the entrepreneurial spirit of the program’s research projects intrigued me, as they provide an innovative, collaborative, and lasting skill set often overlooked in other programs.

How did the balance between in-classroom teaching and on-site visits enhance your learning experience in the course?

The high-level expertise and knowledge provided by the program leaders, Jeffrey Boloten and Viv Lawes, laid the groundwork for our on-site visits to be highly beneficial and rewarding.

Combining elements of academic theory and professional practice into our schedule allowed for a holistic and fast-paced approach to art education. One of my most memorable days in the program was spent learning about how conservation practices facilitate the preservation of artworks for future generations thanks to technological developments. This lecture was followed by a trip to a Chiswick-based conservation studio, where we observed outstanding craftsmanship and expertise.

How did the combination of art history theory and art business practice equip you with the tools and knowledge to navigate the art industry?

By pursuing the Art History and Art Business modules together within the 12-week Certificate, I was able to refine my own interests within these disciplines. The Institute’s “learning by doing” approach drove me to develop many valuable art-market skills in database research, visual analysis, authentication, conservation, curation, and more.

Another advantage of undertaking both modules in parallel is their natural overlap when learning about topics such as the institutional history of art fairs, auction houses, and museums, as well as the artists, movements, and influences shaping them.

What were some of the most valuable aspects of the curriculum?

This program offers a uniquely immersive experience by providing students with access to the behind-the-scenes workings of the art world. Over the span of 12 weeks, my cohort and I had the privilege of meeting fascinating leaders in this sector, who have had a lasting impact on my career development. I also greatly enjoyed the intergenerational and interdisciplinary nature of the program, with students of every age and career path brought together by our shared passion for art.

Did the course influence your next steps, whether pursuing further study, building your career, or deepening your personal engagement with art?

By the end of the 12-week Certificate, my exposure to this wide array of subjects, experts, and competencies made me realize that I wished to pursue a Master’s in Art History to further research my interest in the intersection between art, culture, and diplomacy.

This dream has now become a reality since matriculating at the University of St Andrews in September 2025! In addition, following my time at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, I had the opportunity to pursue a summer internship at the prestigious World Monuments Fund in London, where I learned about the multifaceted world of international cultural heritage preservation. Without the knowledge and skills acquired in the 12-week Certificate, I would not have been as equipped to navigate such new and exciting career endeavors.

What advice or tips would you give to Sotheby’s Institute applicants?

If you are considering embarking on Sotheby’s Institute of Art’s 12-week Certificate, I would highly encourage you to take this opportunity to step out of your comfort zone. Whether you are just starting in the art world, transitioning from another sector, or simply wishing to elevate your portfolio, this experience will take your career to the next level.

Make the most of your time during the program by meaningfully connecting with those you meet. You never know where the next great idea, open door, or impactful conversation lies ahead in your art world journey!
