More than 100 students have taken part in the MA Work Placement elective in 2025 which underscores the Institute’s deep-rooted industry connections and the value of real-world experience. These placements, spanning London’s vibrant art and luxury sectors, are made possible through long-standing partnerships and the support of a global alumni network.

“At the heart of our placement programme is a vital alumni network,” explains Diana Ewer, Head of Careers, London. “Around 40% of our placement supervisors are Sotheby’s Institute graduates who understand the transformative value of industry-based learning and are essential in nurturing the next generation of creative industry professionals.”

This commitment to giving back is exemplified by this year’s work placement partnership with Waddington Custot, a prestigious international London-based art gallery known for its expertise in modern and contemporary art.

Alumni Spotlight: Waddington Custot

“As alum of Sotheby’s Institute, it’s incredibly meaningful to come full circle and now have the opportunity to open doors for more Sotheby’s Institute students,” reflect Carmen Hu and Victor Custot. “Nurturing emerging talent and offering them genuine insight into the art world isn’t just a privilege – it’s a responsibility we embrace with purpose and passion.”

The gallery hosted MA Art Business student, Timia Braun, providing her with a comprehensive insight into gallery operations across multiple departments.

Student Experiential Learning: From Classroom to Gallery Space

“As part of my Master’s, I had the opportunity to join the Waddington Custot team for a work placement, rotating across marketing, press, research, and front-of-house,” shares Timia Braun. “It was a hands-on introduction to the fast-paced rhythm of a commercial gallery working across both primary and secondary markets.”

Timia’s placement included supporting press outreach for TEFAF New York and an upcoming Bernar Venet exhibition, preparing materials for The Shape of Colour show, and conducting provenance research for the gallery’s internal database.

“This experience deepened my interest in working within galleries, particularly in roles that combine audience engagement and communication, and helped me clarify where my strengths lie,” she reflects.

The continued growth of the MA Work Placement underscores a commitment to bridging academic learning with professional practice, ensuring Master’s graduates enter the art and luxury worlds with both proven knowledge and practical expertise. The results paint a positive picture with 60% of elective participants in 2024 securing work before graduating the program.
