How would you describe your Sotheby’s Institute experience?

For the past 15 years, I have been heavily involved with illustration and imaginative realism art—first as a collector while I completed my history doctorate, and now as a lecturer and founder of the independent publishing house BearWolf Books, which focuses on traditionally illustrated volumes.

My time at Sotheby’s Institute has completely redefined how I approach this genre that I’m so passionate about. It has shifted my focus from appreciating and collecting to a role of stewardship.

During the program I curated two exhibitions with the Mazza Museum of Children’s Illustration (one scheduled for October 2026), established an award for imaginative realism art with Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, served on their jury panels, and decided to add a formal advisory and appraisal division to my business.

What were the key elements of the MA in Art Business (Online) that influenced your decision to study with Sotheby’s Institute?

Expanding my practical knowledge and the flexibility of the online graduate program were the key elements in my decision to enroll.

How has the mix of live online sessions, independent study, and interactive digital activities shaped the way you engage with the material?

The brilliant part about the live sessions is that they often included lectures and conversations with a diverse group of professionals within the art ecosystem. This access gave us invaluable opportunities to ask questions and gain insights into the daily operations of the art world.

I loved the independent studies because I could apply what I learned in previous semesters to my own business.

How do you balance the program with work or other commitments?

It can be challenging, especially during the fall when I am traveling almost every weekend for art shows, but that is the beauty of the online program! I have watched lectures in hotel rooms and completed projects on airplanes. If you are already in the art field, it is certainly an immersive experience.

As the Owner and Art Director of BearWolf Books, what inspired you to launch an independent publishing house?

My initial inspiration came from missing the fairytale and mythology books from my childhood—books filled with illustrations that were pieces of art in their own right.

As a collector, I had already established relationships with artists and worked with them on commissions, so publishing seemed like the natural next progression. At BearWolf, we exclusively use traditional methods to illustrate our books. Each illustration is created in oil, acrylic, or graphite.

In what ways has the MA in Art Business (Online) shaped or informed your thinking as you develop your business?

The MA in Art Business (Online) program was pivotal in the expansion of my business to include appraisals and art advisory. During the first semester, I realized how much I loved valuation and found this service lacking within imaginative realism. I am now USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice) compliant and in the process of joining the Appraisers Association of America.

What advice or tips would you give to Sotheby’s Institute applicants?

Be fearless, and always keep learning. Don’t be afraid to create your own path.
