Masterclass: The Market for Contemporary Art: Value, Price, and Speculation

February 19, 2026
6:00 – 7:00 PM GMT
Talk
RSVP

Explore the complex relationship between cultural value and economic value in the market for contemporary art.

This lecture positions the market in a broader ecosystem, commonly referred to as art world, and examines the market’s intricacies beyond supply and demand.

We will discuss select examples from both the primary market, where art is sold for the first time, and auction sales.

Gain insight into how sales at galleries and auctions, museum exhibitions, biennale participation, reviews, publications, and art prizes create cultural value and price and why one is not always a reflection of the other.

Speakers:

Dr Melanie Fasche, Senior Lecturer and Deputy Program Director, MA in Art Business, London

This online masterclass is organised by the MA in Art Business.
