Taking the trading of Chinese art as its focus, this lecture offers insight into the phenomenal rise of the Hong Kong art market in the 20th century.

The eventful period between the 1950s and 1990s saw the emergence of influential collecting societies, museums, dealer galleries and auction houses that established this former British colony as a leading global hub in the art market today.

Explore how Cantonese, Shanghainese and British connoisseurs collaborated to shape Chinese art scholarship and market fashions in this multicultural location, and how political and socio-economic factors created favourable conditions for Hong Kong’s rise to success.

Speakers:

Dr Ivy Chan, Lecturer, MA in Art Business, London

This online masterclass is organised by the MA in Art Business.
