Explore Hong Kong’s phenomenal rise to success as a leader in the art world in this Masterclass led by MA in Art Business lecturer Dr Ivy Chan.

Taking the trading of Chinese art as its focus, this masterclass led by MA in Art Business lecturer Dr Ivy Yi Yan Chan offers insight into the phenomenal rise of the Hong Kong art market in the 20th century.

The eventful period between the 1950s and 1990s saw the emergence of influential collecting societies, museums, dealer galleries and auction houses that established this former British colony as a leading global hub in the art market.

Sotheby’s held their first auction in Hong Kong in 1973, and their continued success in the region reflect the city’s economic dynamism, advantageous geographical location and favourable trade terms.

Explore how Cantonese, Shanghainese and British connoisseurs collaborated to shape art scholarship and market fashions in this multicultural location, and how political and socio-economic factors propelled Hong Kong’s rise to success.

Please note that attendance to the event is restricted to persons aged 18 or above. Attendees will be emailed a Zoom link for this online event.
