Mike Cooter

Senior Lecturer, MA in Contemporary Art, London

Dr Mike Cooter is an artist, writer, lecturer, and educator based in London. He has taught both critical theory and studio practice internationally. He lectures and writes on a broad range of topics, from the history of exhibitions to experimental film, new media, animation, and new materialisms, and holds a Fellowship from AdvanceHE for his work in Higher Education.

In 2024/5, he convened a collaborative seminar between Sotheby’s and the Architectural Association where he teaches a unit on Exhibition Design and Display, on the theme of value in art and architecture. Mike is a regular Visiting Tutor on the MFA at Goldsmiths (University of London) where he earned his PhD on ‘MacGuffins’, a type of narratively-structured and socially-organising artefact rendered in film and literary works.

His writing has been published by e-Flux Criticism, Mousse, The Exhibitionist and Princeton University Press (on the Italian/Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi). As a production manager, technician, and fabricator, he has been involved in the preparation of over 150 exhibitions in commercial galleries and public institutions. Mike is a practising artist who makes exhibitions internationally. His radio sculpture Dingus was nominated as Best Drama at the 2023 ARIAS.
