Natasha Degen

Director, Sotheby's Institute of Art-New York

Natasha Degen is the Director of Sotheby’s Institute of Art-New York. An acclaimed academic and internationally recognized authority in her field, she brings two decades of experience at the forefront of art market scholarship, as well a long track record as a leader, writer, and educator. A sought-after voice on the creative industries, their markets, and the institutions that shape them, she appears frequently in the media as a commentator and expert.

Her books include Merchants of Style: Art and Fashion After Warhol (Reaktion Books) and The Market (MIT Press). Her essays and criticism have appeared in The New York TimesThe New YorkerThe Financial TimesArtforum, and frieze, among other publications.

Before joining Sotheby’s Institute, Degen spent a decade as Professor and Chair of Art Market Studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology (SUNY) and she currently serves on the boards of the International Art Market Studies Association and the Journal for Art Market Studies.

She holds an AB from Princeton University and an MPhil and PhD from the University of Cambridge. Having lived and worked in London and Beijing, as well as New York, she brings a global perspective to her understanding of the contemporary art world, its historical origins, and its ongoing evolution.
