Fine art photography is one of the most exciting and fastest-growing collecting categories today. Yet because photography is everywhere, many prospective collectors feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to begin.

As a medium produced in multiples, photography requires informed buyers who understand not only the works themselves, but also the market—and, most importantly, the right questions to ask before making a purchase.

This introductory 5-day Intensive in-person series is led by a pioneer who began to collector photography 40 years ago.

Designed for both beginners and more seasoned collectors, the course covers every essential aspect of collecting photography.

Topics include the key questions to ask before spending a penny; the do’s and don’ts of navigating the market; how to buy at auction; where to shop (fairs, galleries, auctions, online platforms); and how to craft the character or theme of your collection.

Because building relationships is critical to success in this field, the program also includes exclusive behind-the-scenes visits to leading photography galleries.

Students will meet with gallery dealers, museum curators, and Sotheby’s Global Head of Photography.

Finally, to round out the class, students will present an image they’d hypothetically like to buy from a gallery, applying the hands-on knowledge and questions they’ve learned to a real-life situation.

After only five days, this masterclass will equip students with the knowledge – and confidence – to navigate today’s photography market – whether buying from a gallery, auction, art fair or online platform and to jump right in.

Students who complete this course are eligible to receive a partial tuition fee waiver equivalent to $2,000 USD if they subsequently enroll in one of our Master’s Degree Programs at our New York, London, or Online locations (pending application and acceptance to the Master’s Degree program). For further details, please see our Student Policies.
