London: the city where tradition meets avant-garde

A buzzing center for both classic and edgy museums, major galleries, private collections, internationally renowned artists, and birthplace to Sotheby’s and Christie’s, the world’s two most important auction houses.

Settled in the heart of Bloomsbury, Sotheby’s Institute-London is part of Bedford Square, one of the best-preserved Georgian squares in London. A private central garden lies at the heart of the square, and is accessible to Institute students through a private key. Sotheby’s auction house, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Royal Academy of Arts‎ are a few minutes’ walk away. The Institute is also close to Mayfair, the traditional center of the London art market, where many dealers and galleries are located.

Live and learn in London

An international taste-maker, London creates an ideal environment for living and learning within a vibrant community of art professionals. In addition to their studies, Institute students experience full immersion in the London art scene through visits to museums, art fairs, galleries, private collections, and artist studios, led by the Institute’s network of art professionals in London and beyond. Sotheby’s auction house also provides students with privileged access to pre-sale viewings, private events, and handling sessions.

Our approach to the study of art and its markets ensures that students receive privileged access and behind-the-scenes insights on how objects are made, handled, collected, curated, displayed, bought, and sold. Internships and an accredited work placement are available to compliment this unique, participatory experience.

All Master’s degree programs at Sotheby’s Institute in London, including the Master’s degree, are validated by The University of Manchester, the first and foremost of the English civic universities and part of the esteemed Russell Group.
